Homocyst(e)ine, diet, and cardiovascular diseases: a statement for healthcare professionals from the Nutrition Committee, American Heart Association.

Homocysteine and Diet Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid, rapidly oxidized in plasma to the disulfides homocystine and cysteine-homocysteine (Figure 1). Plasma/serum total homocysteine, also termed homocyst(e)ine, is the sum of homocysteine in all 3 components. Figure 2 displays factors involved in the metabolism of homocysteine, including its metabolic relationship to methionine. A...

Elevated plasma homocyst(e)ine concentration as a possible independent risk factor for stroke.

Homocyst(e)ine refers to the sulfur-containing amino acids homocysteine, homocystine, and homocysteine-cysteine mixed disulfide, which normally exist in plasma in both the free and protein-bound forms. Marked hyperhomocyst(e)inemia is associated with well-recognized complications of occlusive thrombotic events and a characteristic syndrome. It is less clear whether mild to moderate elevations i...

IMMUNOHAEMATOLOGICAL AND CYTOGENETICAL STUDIES ON HUMAN POPULATION EXPOSED TO SULFUR MUSTARD

The patients evaluated in this study were classified into three groups of severe, moderate, and mild according to the severity of exposure to sulfur mustard. We evaluated the Immunological and Cytogenetical status of the patients after eight years of their exposure to sulfur mustard. The investigations revealed that the number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes in the patients with sever...

Relation of plasma homocyst(e)ine to cerebral infarction and cerebral atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A number of investigations support the theory that the elevated plasma homocyst(e)ine is associated with occlusive vascular disease. The aim of this study is to examine whether moderate hyperhomocyst(e)inemia is an independent risk factor for cerebral infarction. In addition, we examined the association between plasma homocyst(e)ine and the severity of cerebral atheroscle...

Interleukin-17 Gene Expression and Serum Levels in Children with Severe Asthma

Objective: To determine the role of IL-17 in predicting severe asthma. Methods: We obtained serum samples from asthmatic children under the age of 5-year in three different groups of mild (n=33), moderate (n=28) and severe (...
